John’s portrait of Peggy Fleming first appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Feb 19, 1968 issue and captures the skater’s graceful bearing and calm demeanor on the ice.
The JGZ Archive is grateful to Ann M. Shumard, the Senior Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, who led us through each step of the acquisition process (and there were many!). Ms. Shumard made the initial selections that included tennis great Pancho Gonzales in a B&W photograph from 1957 and Wilt Chamberlain in action against rival Bill Russell (1967).
The portrait selections were not all from the world of sports, however. The light-hearted 1974 portrait of the Mary Tyler Moore Show cast (below) was also tapped for the NPG’s permanent collection. John photographed the group (bottom L to R: Betty White, Gavin MacLeod, Ed Asner, Ted Knight, Georgia Engel and Mary Tyler Moore (center)) for an exclusive TIME magazine cover story in 1974, when the comedy series was atop the network ratings and Valerie Harper’s spin-off “Rhoda” was making its debut on CBS.
